At TapaCraft, we channeled that spirit into our Panda Collection, a series of handcrafted mother-of-pearl brooches that bring these beloved creatures to life through the ancient art of luodian (螺钿).
Seven Personalities, One Art Form
Each panda in our collection captures a different moment — a different mood. There's the Round Lying Panda, curled up in peaceful repose, its shell inlay catching light like moonlight on still water. The Cloud Lying Panda dreams beneath an imagined sky, while the Tilted-Head Panda seems caught mid-thought, curious about something just beyond the frame.
The Crouching Panda hides behind its paws, peeking out with shy curiosity. Our Mushroom Hat Panda wears a tiny cap of iridescent green, and the Heart-Face Panda gazes upward with an expression that's impossible not to love.
3,000 Years in the Making
What makes these brooches truly special isn't just the design — it's the craftsmanship. Mother-of-pearl inlay (luodian) is one of China's oldest decorative arts, dating back over three millennia. Each piece begins with carefully selected abalone shell, cut and shaped by hand into impossibly thin slices. These are then painstakingly inlaid into a lacquer base, one fragment at a time.
The result? A brooch that doesn't just look beautiful — it changes. Tilt a panda brooch toward the light, and the mother-of-pearl shimmers through an entire spectrum of colors: soft pinks, cool blues, warm golds, and mysterious greens. No two pieces are ever exactly alike, because nature itself provides the palette.
